Season 1939-40
The 1939–1940 season was the 48th season of competitive football in England. The kick-off in all divisions took place on Saturday, 26 August 1939. On 1 September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. On Saturday, 2 September 1939, there was a full round of matches in all divisions of the Football League, with the third round completed in all divisions on that day, but following the British declaration of war on Germany on 3 September 1939, no more games were played, and the season was abandoned. The fixtures of 2 September 1939 were the last ones that were played.
Shortly after war was declared, most competitions were abandoned as the country's attention turned to the war effort. A few leagues, including the Southern League and Northern League, did manage to complete a season, but in the latter more than half of the teams were unable to fulfill all their fixtures and resigned.
When the season was abandoned, after three rounds of games, Blackpool were leading the First Division.
League tables when season was abandoned[edit]
The tables below are reproduced here in the exact form that they can be found at the The Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation website and in Rothmans Book of Football League Records 1888–89 to 1978–79, with home and away statistics separated.
Match results are drawn from Rothmans for all divisions.
