Manchester United's David De Gea: Second place is not enough for us

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has said finishing second in the Premier League is "simply not enough."

United recorded their highest finish since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, securing runners-up spot behind champions Manchester City.

But Spain goalkeeper De Gea warned that Jose Mourinho's team must end their five-year wait for another title soon.

"I believe that, for a club like United, even second place is simply not enough," he told United Review.

"We have to be fighting hard to win something and we have that opportunity next week [in the FA Cup final against Chelsea].

"You get nothing for coming second or getting close to the league leaders.

"In the end, you always have to be fighting to win something, as that's what this club and the fans really deserve and so it's just that -- second place is not enough."

United can end a third straight season with a trophy if they overcome Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday.

It is a chance for De Gea, who will compete with Sergio Romero to start in goal, to win a second FA Cup winners' medal after United's success in 2016.

The 27-year-old said it was important the club keep silverware coming in as they emerge from a post-Ferguson dip in form.

"It's what this club has an obligation to do -- get through to cup finals, go on to win them, lift silverware and continue to make this club even bigger," he said.

"I believe that's the most important thing, always being in the shake-up, fighting to win trophies and battling to keep making United exactly what it is -- a massive, massive club."
